Russia was once Germany鈥檚 most important supplier of natural gas, but since February 2022鈥攚hen the Russo-Ukrainian War broke out鈥攖he country has decided to reduce its reliance on Russian energy. The planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline project was put on hold and suffered damage in September due to an attack; meanwhile, even the operational Nord Stream 1 pipeline faced disruptions.
Recently, some politicians have suggested that if peace is achieved in the future, Germany should reconsider importing gas from Russia again. This proposal has sparked discussions about restarting the Nord Stream pipelines.
The German Green Party (Die Gr眉nen) strongly opposes this idea and argues it would cause significant harm by making Germany overly dependent on Russian natural gas once more.
Although neither CDU nor SPD have given a clear response, as they may form part of a new coalition government in the future, some believe that if Russia becomes a reliable energy supplier again, purchasing its gas could be reconsidered.
However, outgoing Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck (Green Party) emphasized that Nord Stream 2 has not yet been certified and any decision on whether to activate it remains under discussion.
Energy and geopolitical expert Jacopo Maria Pepe warns against American investors getting involved in the operation of these pipelines as this could lead Germany back into a dependency trap. He suggests considering purchasing the pipeline company after its bankruptcy declaration, scheduled for May 2025, which would help mitigate future risks.
Furthermore, experts advise that while developing green hydrogen and other renewable energy sources should be accelerated, more flexible and diversified solutions to ensure stable energy supply must also be sought.
