Kawasaki's Hydrogen-Powered Quadruped Robot Vehicle
At the 2025 Osaka Kansai Expo, Kawasaki Heavy Industries unveiled CORLEO, its latest quadruped robot and a concept model for future mobility envisioned in 2050. This hydrogen-powered four-legged robotic vehicle integrates Kawasaki’s expertise in both two-wheeled vehicles and robotics to enable riders to operate it similarly to riding a horse while traversing terrains inaccessible to traditional vehicles.

Currently, there are no plans for commercialization; however, CORLEO is comparable in size to large motorcycles and utilizes a hydrogen fuel engine as its power source. Riders sit atop the robot in a manner akin to horseback riding and control movement by shifting their center of gravity. This innovative concept combines artificial intelligence (AI) with clean energy technology for versatile terrain navigation.

CORLEO incorporates motorcycle-like swing arm suspension systems—typically used between frames and rear wheels to absorb shocks—ensuring stability even on uneven surfaces. Each leg can be independently controlled, allowing the robot to navigate rough terrains effortlessly. It is powered by a 150cc hydrogen engine that converts energy into electrical power for its limbs.

The sleek body design, inspired by Kawasaki motorcycles, utilizes metal and carbon materials for aerodynamic efficiency. A distinctive head-like shield at the front incorporates built-in lights extending visibility. CORLEO responds to riders’ physical movements, adjusting steps based on changes in center of gravity. A heads-up display (HUD) provides real-time information about hydrogen levels, navigation data, stability metrics, and weight distribution.

Rubber “hooves” enhance traction and stability across various surfaces while also enabling obstacle jumping capabilities. Specific performance metrics have not yet been disclosed as CORLEO remains a conceptual model without detailed specifications such as speed or battery life.
