Purchase Spike Preceding Trump Tariffs Enhances U.S. Sales for Japanese Automakers; Hybrid Vehicle Supply Issues Continue
Consumers rushed to buy before the implementation of additional tariffs proposed by the Trump administration, leading to an increase in sales for major Japanese automakers' new cars during Q1 2025. The demand was particularly high for hybrid vehicles (HV), resulting in shortages.

According to a report from multiple Japanese media outlets, six prominent Japanese car manufacturers reported combined US vehicle sales figures for January-March at approximately 1.4978 million units, marking an increase of about five percent compared with the same period last year. The anticipation of higher prices due to impending tariffs spurred consumers into action.

A Lexus dealership employee in Manhattan noted that after news regarding potential new taxes broke out, orders surged significantly. Customers who had not previously contacted them began calling frequently; especially for hybrid vehicles (HV), which were sold-out and luxury cars saw a spike in inquiries as well.

The spokesperson from Toyota's North American headquarters stated: "Hybrid vehicle inventory remains tight." A senior executive at one of the Japanese parts suppliers working with Toyota noted that based on current orders, strong demand for hybrid vehicles is expected to continue. Additionally, it was estimated that sales figures for Tacoma trucks assembled in Mexico were nearly triple those seen last year due to tariff concerns.

Toyota's US car sales increased by 1%, reaching around half a million units; the proportion of electric and HV models sold reached an all-time high at over fifty-one percent during this quarter. Honda saw its new vehicle sales increase by 5.3%; Nissan鈥檚 rose by 5.7%; Subaru experienced growth of nearly nine percent, Mazda's increased ten-point-two percent while Mitsubishi Motors witnessed a rise in sales of eleven point four percent.
